Archbishop William Temple:
Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by his holiness; the nourishment of mind by his truth; the purifying of the imagination by his beauty; the opening of the heart to his love; the surrender of will to his purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy of that self centeredness which is our original sin and the source of actual sin.
O Lord who has taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves, hear this prayer for the relief of all in this land who depend on agriculture , particularly livestock farmers, who have gone through so many trials in recent years and who now face a new and terrible threat to their livelihoods.
O God of goodness,
In the mystery of natural disasters we look to thee,
Trusting there is an explanation that will satisfy our minds and hearts.
Accept our compassion for our fellow men, especially our farmers and those who live by agriculture, accept our desire for their relief
And our hope for knowledge that will control the forces of nature.
Help us to help thee complete thy universe,
O Creator Father,
To remove flaws,
So that we may be sub-creators with thee of the
Kingdom of thy love in Jesus Christ.
A prayer for our society:
Father
Who has made all men in your likeness
And lovest all whom thou has made,
Suffer not our family to separate itself from you
By building barriers of race and colour.
As your Son our Saviour was born of a Hebrew Mother
But rejoiced in the faith of a Syrian woman and a Roman
Solder, welcomed Greeks who sought him and allowed a man from Africa to carry his cross, so teach us to regard the members of all races as fellow heirs of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Finally, thinking of our troubles wherever they come from let us recall the words of Job and of the Psalmist:
Naked came I out of my mother’s womb and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away: blessed be the name of the Lord.
God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble;
Therefore we will not fear though the earth be moved and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea,
though the waters thereof roar and be troubled though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
